It is a great pleasure to present new works by Amy Adler (*1966) in her first solo show in Berlin at c/o – Atle Gerhardsen.
The American born artist shows a new series of 7 cibachrome prints, titled Young Photographer. The motif of these works is a young boy about 12 years old who is shooting his very first photographs with a camera that was just given to him by the artist herself. It is Amy Adler’s first camera that she used for the past 15 years.
Characteristic for her work - also for the exhibited suite - is the transfer of primarily taken photographs or found images into pastel drawings that are finally documented in unique cibachrome prints. Typically for her drawings is a robust texture that gives the figures a sculptural character.
The portrayed persons could be celebrities from the music or film world (e.g. Leonardo DiCaprio) as well as completely anonymous ones - but also the artist herself. Adler thinks of her subjects as ‘characters’, who are performing like in a film. They are mainly focused on acts like reading, drawing, making music or taking photos. Their postures are slightly changing from one picture to the other, lending the series an almost ‘cinematic’ character. The object of attraction itself is kept back of the viewers eyes, it’s the expression and action itself that attracts all attention.
She was included in the Kwangju Biennale 2000 in Korea and recently exhibited in The Americans-New Art, Barbican Gallery, London (2001) as well as in Form Follows Fiction at the Castello di Rivoli, Turin, Italy (2001). This year she had a solo show at Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo and exhibited her series Amy Adler photographs Leonardo DiCaprio at UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In fall she will present new works at Casey Kaplan Gallery, New York.
